ABOUT THE STORY
Why did Jonah run away?
God told Jonah to warn the people of Nineveh to turn from their wrongdoing. Jonah did not want to go, so he boarded a ship sailing in the opposite direction. A fierce storm soon showed that running away could not solve the problem.
God used an enormous gentle fish to keep Jonah alive while he prayed. Jonah received another chance, obeyed, and went to Nineveh. When the people changed their ways, God showed them mercy and patiently helped Jonah understand why every person matters.
God gives another chance
Jonah ran away, but God continued calling him. After praying, Jonah could choose obedience and take the next right step.
We can pray anywhere
Jonah prayed from inside the great fish. Children can bring God honest words in every place and every kind of trouble.
God cares for every person
God's mercy reached an entire city, including people Jonah disliked. His care is wider than our preferences or grudges.

Long ago, God spoke to Jonah, a prophet who knew God's voice. 'Go to the great city of Nineveh,' God said, 'and warn the people to turn from their wrongdoing.' Nineveh was far away, and Jonah did not want to go.
Instead, he hurried down through the hills to the busy harbor of Joppa. There Jonah found a ship sailing in the opposite direction. He paid his fare, stepped aboard, and hid below the deck.
The sailors raised the cream sail, and the ship moved out across the blue sea. Jonah hoped he could run far away from the task God had given him.
But a powerful wind swept over the water, and a terrible storm began. Waves lifted the ship and dropped it again as ropes pulled tight. The frightened sailors cried for help and threw heavy cargo into the sea.
The captain found Jonah sleeping below and called, 'Wake up! Pray to your God!' Soon the sailors learned that Jonah was running away from the Lord. Jonah told them, 'I worship the God who made the sea and the dry land.'
'What should we do so the sea will become calm?' they asked. Jonah answered honestly, 'Lift me up and put me into the sea.' The sailors did not want to hurt him, so they rowed with all their strength. But the wind blew harder, and the waves grew higher.
At last they prayed, 'Lord, please be merciful to us.' They lifted Jonah over the side and released him into the deep blue water.
At once, the storm stopped, and the sea became calm. The sailors stared in wonder, then thanked and worshiped the Lord.
God had not forgotten Jonah. He provided an enormous great fish, which swallowed Jonah safely and kept him alive. For three days and three nights, Jonah remained inside the great fish.
In the darkness, Jonah prayed, 'When I was in trouble, I called to you, Lord. You heard my voice and brought my life up from the deep.' Jonah promised to obey and said, 'Salvation comes from the Lord.'
God heard Jonah's prayer and told the great fish what to do. The fish carried Jonah to shore and spat him safely onto the dry sand.
Then God spoke again: 'Go to Nineveh and give the message I tell you.' This time Jonah obeyed, crossed the hills, and entered the enormous city. He walked through the streets, warning the people to turn from their wrongdoing.
The people of Nineveh believed God. Families, workers, and even the king humbled themselves and changed their ways. God saw their honest turning and showed the whole city mercy.
Jonah struggled to understand why God had forgiven people he disliked. Outside the city, God grew a leafy plant that shaded Jonah from the hot sun. When the plant quickly withered, Jonah felt deeply upset about losing it.
God asked, 'You care about this little plant. Shouldn't I care about all the people in Nineveh?' Jonah's story reminds us that God patiently calls us to obey, hears us when we pray, and cares for every person with mercy.
