THE STORY IN A FEW WORDS

Summary for Kids

Zechariah and Elizabeth were older, loved God, and had no child—but neither had done anything wrong. While Zechariah served in the temple, Gabriel appeared and promised that Elizabeth would have a son named John, who would prepare people to welcome the Lord. Gabriel told Zechariah he would be unable to speak while they waited for the promise to happen. Zechariah kept serving and communicated with his hands. At home, Elizabeth became pregnant and thanked God for treating her with kindness. As her sixth month began, Gabriel traveled north toward Nazareth.

Lessons for Kids

  1. 1

    Choose kindness instead of blame

Zechariah and Elizabeth’s long wait was not proof that they had done something wrong. When someone is hurting, choose kindness instead of guessing why it happened.

  2. 2

Use calm words when someone is afraid

Gabriel told Zechariah not to be afraid. You can sit nearby, speak gently, and get a trusted grown-up when someone feels scared.

  3. 3

    Be honest about doubt

Zechariah asked how he could be sure, and Gabriel told him he had not believed the message. When you have doubts, speak honestly and listen carefully.

  4. 4

Make room for every way people communicate

Zechariah used his hands when words would not come. Give people time, pay attention, and never make fun of someone because they communicate differently.

  5. 5

Do the next good thing while you wait

God gave Zechariah and Elizabeth a specific promise; not every wish is the same as a promise. While you wait, pray honestly, ask for help, and choose one helpful thing you can do today.
