THE STORY IN A FEW WORDS

Summary for Kids

Jesus asked John to baptize him at the Jordan. John hesitated, but Jesus explained that this was the faithful way to begin God's work. Jesus was not turning away from hidden wrongdoing. He was standing with the people he had come to save. John carefully supported Jesus in the shallow water. As Jesus prayed, heaven opened, the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove, and the Father's voice called Jesus his beloved Son.

Jesus belongs inside Israel's long family story, and his coming reaches toward the whole human family. At once, the Spirit led him into the wilderness. After forty days without food, Jesus was truly hungry. The tempter urged him to turn a stone into bread, bow for worldly power, and jump from a high place to force God to rescue him. Jesus refused every selfish, cruel, or reckless shortcut and answered with Scripture understood through faithful love.

When the testing ended, angels cared for Jesus, and wild animals were there in the lonely place. Jesus then walked back toward the Jordan country, dusty and lean but clear in purpose, ready to begin the public work ahead.

    Jesus Chose Humble Obedience

    Jesus did not need to turn away from wrongdoing. He entered the water to stand with the people he came to save and to begin God's work faithfully.

    The Father called Jesus beloved before Jesus preached to crowds or performed a public sign. Love and belonging are not prizes we earn by impressing others.

    Jesus belongs inside Israel's story, and the family line reaches back to Adam. His coming is good news for people from every family and place.

    Good Goals Need Good Ways

    Food was good, hunger was real, and being tempted was not the same as doing wrong. Jesus showed that even a good goal never makes a selfish or cruel shortcut good.

    Trust Is Never a Dangerous Stunt

    The tempter twisted Scripture to pressure Jesus toward a reckless leap, but Jesus refused. If anyone pressures a child to prove faith or courage by doing something unsafe, the child should step away and tell a trusted adult.
