Beside the Jordan, John pointed people away from himself and toward Jesus. He called Jesus the Lamb of God, a special name showing that Jesus had come to deal with the wrong that turns people away from God and harms one another. John also testified that Jesus is the Son of God, the One who gives the Holy Spirit. Two of John's disciples followed Jesus. Instead of keeping them at a distance, Jesus invited them, “Come and see.” Andrew then brought his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus gave Simon the new name Peter, meaning rock—a promise of what patient love could shape him to become.

Jesus called Philip, and Philip invited Nathanael. Nathanael had honest doubts, but he came to see. When Jesus said he had seen Nathanael under the fig tree before Philip called him, Nathanael realized Jesus already knew him. His doubt opened into wonder, and he called Jesus Rabbi, the Son of God, and the King of Israel.

At a wedding in Cana, the festival drink ran out. Mary trusted Jesus and told the servants to do whatever he said. Jesus directed them to fill six stone jars with water. When the banquet master tasted what they drew out, the water had become fine wine. Jesus quietly protected a family from shame. This first sign displayed his glory, and his disciples trusted him more deeply. After a short stay in Capernaum, Jesus and the growing group joined the road toward Jerusalem for Passover.
