Summary for Kids

Some time after Jesus’ birth, Magi from the east followed his star to Jerusalem and then to a house in Bethlehem, where young Jesus was with Mary. They rejoiced, worshiped him, and brought three kinds of gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Warned not to return to Herod, the Magi went home by another road, while Joseph took Mary and Jesus to safety in Egypt after a messenger warned him of Herod’s plan. Herod’s cruel order brought terrible grief to Bethlehem; the violence stays outside our pictures, but the hurting families still matter. After Herod died, the family returned and settled in Nazareth, where safety slowly became part of ordinary life.

    Wise worship listens and changes course

    The Magi worshiped Jesus, listened to God’s warning, and went home by another road. Honoring God can mean changing direction when the right path becomes clear.

    Be honest about what Matthew tells us

    Matthew names three kinds of gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—but does not say there were three Magi or call them kings. Honest learning does not add details the story never gives.

    Let trusted adults handle danger

    Joseph acted quickly to protect Mary and Jesus when he was warned about Herod. If you ever feel unsafe, tell a trusted grown-up right away; handling adult danger is never a child’s job.

    Welcome families seeking refuge

    Mary, Joseph, and Jesus needed safety and a place to live in Egypt. Families who flee danger are parents and children protecting life, so they deserve dignity, kindness, and welcome.

    Care about other families’ grief

    Jesus was safe, but other families in Bethlehem were hurting, and God did not forget their cries. We can be thankful for safety while still caring for people who are sad or harmed.
