THE STORY IN A FEW WORDS

Summary for Kids

Every year, Mary and Joseph traveled with relatives and neighbors from Nazareth to Jerusalem for Passover. When Jesus was twelve, he went with them. After the festival, the group started home, and Mary and Joseph thought Jesus was walking with other travelers. After a day, they realized he was missing and hurried back to Jerusalem. After three days, they found him safe in a public teaching area of the Temple. Jesus had been listening respectfully, asking sincere questions, and answering with such wisdom that the teachers were amazed. Mary honestly told Jesus how anxiously she and Joseph had searched. Jesus calmly explained that he must be in his Father’s house and care about his Father’s concerns, though Mary and Joseph did not yet understand. Then Jesus returned to Nazareth with them, lived under their care, and obeyed them. Mary treasured these things in her heart, and Jesus kept growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and people.

Lessons for Kids

  1. 1

    Stay close and get help

When traveling, stay with your responsible adult or group. If you become separated, do not wander farther; stay where safe, responsible adults can help you and tell a trusted grown-up right away.

  2. 2

    Respect a loving grown-up’s worry

Mary and Joseph searched anxiously because Jesus’ safety mattered deeply to them. When someone who cares for you says they were worried, listen kindly and answer honestly.

  3. 3

    Listen, ask, and stay humble

Jesus showed wisdom by listening respectfully, asking sincere questions, and answering calmly—not by showing off. You can be curious and humble at the same time.

  4. 4

Love God and honor your family

Jesus knew that God was his Father and that his Father’s house and concerns mattered. He did not use that truth to disrespect Mary and Joseph; he returned home, lived under their care, and obeyed them.

  5. 5

    Quiet growth matters

Jesus grew in wisdom, stature, and favor during ordinary days in Nazareth. Patient learning, helping at home, and treating people kindly matter even when no crowd is watching.
